The light reflects off of Lake Ontario. There is a bright afternoon starlight. Hearts are gathered together in a concert hall, together.

Looking across this space time moment we work to acquire common tonalities with our instruments in hand. Voices quiver and we seek out harmonies and points of creative dissonance.

Notes sound as the colonial edifice remains in power on this land, a state power that we refuse. We are alive and are sharing this space together. In between the sounds are the silent spaces that are filled with heart.

The starlight electric is a sequence of five recordings by musicians using their instruments and creativity to agree upon a meaning expressed in both silence and sound. Within and around the tones sent through the air, each sound and each intention signals a space that is defiant and strong, vulnerable to the influence of the players in the room.

The group recorded live in the concert hall of the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts in February 2023 in Kingston, Ontario, composing and improvising a suite of musical ideas in the moment. All the material was completely improvised.

Gathering the musicians together - some of whom had never met nor played together - was a leap of trust and vulnerability. I assembled this quartet with this in mind.
